053 – Safety Zone

Security Agent Captain Cassandra Quinn is on assignment to the mining outpost Luna Seven amid rumors of pirates near the outpost. On her approach to the complex, she saw something moving around on the surface of the moon that shouldn’t have been. During her attempts to verify her visual sighting, a mysterious ship blasted her out of the sky. Her story starts HERE.

Meanwhile, miner Simon Tripline is waking up and getting ready for his day while the morning news mentions rumors of piracy surrounding the disappearance of a shipment of ore from Luna Seven. As Simon walks to work, he sees something strange through a porthole. Meanwhile, Simon’s suspicions are aroused concerning Vin Sinclair, one of Luna Seven’s top drillers. Is there a dark secret to his success? The mechanic seems to suggest so, offering a little evidence to go with it, just in time for Simon’s eyes to play tricks on him again. Simon’s story starts HERE.

OH sweet man :) Love the airport feel. Safety zone, white zone… it’s Airplane all over again! I’m just thinking the safety zone might be important…

Well done, sir. Now you may sleep. On technical points: I love the reverse-value lines in the shaded areas. Also, I really love this way you draw moon-craters. It’s so simple (classic three-tone value) yet so affective. Ever see any Jim Stirenko? (could have spelt that wrong)

  3. Ed

    Safety zones are for sissies

  4. Sardtok

I have this weird feeling someone in particular is going to be leaving the safety zone. :P
And yeah, the inverse lines are great. They simply work.

  5. Og

Thanks, everyone. Glad you like the reverse lines. It’s something I’m trying to do more, along with spotting my blacks better.

Ed – I enjoyed your digital art! Everyone go look at Ed’s cool surreal photos… cosmic-e.com

  6. Tom

Yeah, he’s the king of craters. And I also love the reverse lines in the shadows.

  7. Matt

    Well, I hate reverse lines.

No, I am just kidding. But what if I wasn’t? What then? Huh!? I wish your comic were a video game. I would drive around on the moon in one of those diggers all day long and never go in to work. I would get fired and I would lose my house and my family, but I would be happy because I would have the moon.

  8. Og

Matt – that actually sounds like a Plan. What a way to go.

Tom – OK. We just got new biz cards, and I was looking for something humorous to put on there as my title, you know, better than “Lead Artist” which is always temporary, or “Senior Artist” which just makes you sound old. For a while, I had “Polygon Wrangler”, and I’ve toyed with “Pixel Monkey”. But “King of Craters” would have been perfect. Pity it came one week too late. Oy. And also Vay!

  9. Thomas

Well Done! Maybe now you will be able to put down the late night coffee mug and sleep…… Or get started on the next one, that’s cool too. :-)

  10. Og

Ah, Thomas, you know how it is… no rest for the comic artist! :)

  11. Matt

Your card should read: “Man on the Moon”

  12. Og

Ooh, good one, Matt. I have thought of using “Rex Luna” which was how Robin Williams was credited for his performance as King of the Moon in The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen. (It’s Latin for King of the Moon).

  13. Orbital77

    Sweet. Nice image.

  14. Og

Geez, Auburn – long time no see! Thanks for the note!

  15. ZooRocket

Looking great Steve… Moon Town is coming along great! Love the effect you gave the lights.

    Looking forward to more.

Rex Luna! The part Robin Williams specifically asked to not be credited for in the end credits. Man, I have to watch the film again. So silly, but so many memories…

  17. Og

Do you have any idea why Robin specifically asked not to be credited for that role?

Ya know, it’s akin to blasphemy, but von Munchausen is low on my Gilliam list. Everyone tells me I ‘m wrong about it, but it just doesn’t do much for me.

Hey Steve, re: Rex Luna. It was Williams’ agent who insisted on not having him credited due to the fact that he thought the movie was going to bomb spectacularly, and thereby putting a dent in Williams’ career. There is an interesting bit of trivia that the credit had read “Rei D. Tutto” (Italian pun, meaning “King of Everything” But as I recall, watching this in the cinema as a child, I never saw Robin Williams name in the end credits. Of course, Williams forged a healthy career with Gilliam, who then cast him in “The Fisher King”.
