067 – Good News, Bad News

All right ladies and gentlemen – this is it, the end of the first three chapters of the exciting Moon Town saga, and the completion of Book One.

This will also be the last Moon Town strip of 2009. You’re looking good going over the hill, and we’ll see you with fresh strips beginning January 15, 2010.

Security Agent Captain Cassandra Quinn is on assignment to the mining outpost Luna Seven amid rumors of pirates near the outpost. On her approach to the complex, she saw something moving around on the surface of the moon that shouldn’t have been. During her attempts to verify her visual sighting, a mysterious ship blasted her out of the sky. Her story starts HERE.

Meanwhile, miner Simon Tripline is waking up and getting ready for his day while the morning news mentions rumors of piracy surrounding the disappearance of a shipment of ore from Luna Seven. As Simon walks to work, he sees something strange through a porthole. Meanwhile, Simon’s suspicions are aroused concerning Vin Sinclair, one of Luna Seven’s top drillers. Is there a dark secret to his success? The mechanic seems to suggest so, offering a little evidence to go with it, just in time for Simon’s eyes to play tricks on him again. Simon’s story starts HERE.

There’s a phrase which springs to mind, Mr Ogden, which might sum up my friggin awe and just… *sigh* y’know, fanboyness at this wonderous effort.

    I’m really… REALLY… stinkin’ HAPPY for you. :D

Man, I am reading right thru as soon as I get the opportunity. Well done, sir! LOVE it.

  2. Og

Thanks, Paul! I’m happy to have made it to this point.

  3. Tom

So, this is what pure awesome looks like! Great job, nice way to bring us back to Cassie. Man I didn’t see this coming at all. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

  4. brushmen

This cliffhanger is so well placed! Here’s when scrolling adds to the reading experience. Thanks! Happy holidays and see you next year. :)

  5. Mark

Ahh man that’s awesome, what a great looking panel, and a perfect way to end the book. See ya in aught ten.

  6. Og

Thanks, everybody! I’m really happy with the way it came out, and I’m hardly ever happy with it. But this one feels right. Feels like a good old-fashioned serial cliffhanger.

Fun to be sharing this with you. Later, gators, and thanks for all the support!

  7. vonbek

That is a nice cliff hanger! and something to look forward to for 2010! Kudos and congrats Mr. Ogden, suffice it to say that your comic makes a work day go by that much happier. Happy holidays, best wishes, and much anticipation, for the coming year!

  8. Michael Regina

Congrats Steve! Well done. I really enjoyed seeing this come together.

  9. Matt

Your going to make me wait a month! Gah! Well, Alright then, can’t wait to see what happens next! Fantastic work as always!

  10. Og

Matt- yeah, I hear ya. It’s annoying. But I do have other stuff that needs doing, too. What to do. *shrug*

    Thanks for checking it out!

  11. wright

Great stuff; love the “good news, bad news” delivery. Thanks for getting us to this point and looking forward to next year!

  12. J.S.R.

I’ve been waiting impatiently (I’m not a patient woman) for this page and the wait has been entirely worth it.
I had hoped you wouldn’t leave us ignorant of Cassie’s fate, and again, you haven’t disappointed. The art is amazing, as usual. That final panel is both intriguing and exciting, not to mention very satisfying. Your timing is unparalleled. In my humble opinion, you are a master of the genre. Thank you so much for this. Well done!

  13. Og

    Wright – any time. :)

Holy sweet molasses, Jande – you’re far too kind!

The timing is the thing I sweat over; the way the story unfolds is so important to me. To have readers that appreciate all that hard work is very gratifying.

Thank you the nice note, and I’ll get you some more Moon Town next year!

  14. Nickolas

Ho no, you’re not doing this to me?!

Just when I GET to know about this comic, the chapters end and I can’t read anymore before… when do you update by the way?

Since it’s my first comment, I’ll be explicit: You’re drawing are uber nice, coloring is perfect (lots of blue, but I love blue! :D ) and the story got me hooked right from the beginning…

I’m usualy a patient guys… but it’ll be hard to wait the next pages.

    Anyway, great job… I ain’t here to write you a novel! :P

  15. Og

Yeah, Nickolas, I hear ya. Tough to wait it out, but it’ll be your Christmas break and next thing you know Moon Town will be back. I have a lot to do over the next three and a half weeks, so that’s how it is. But I’m glad you’re liking it!

As for when the story updates, I aim for 3 times a week, but I don’t really see this as a webcomic – this is a graphic novel that I’m serializing online while I complete it. So I don’t kill myself over the release schedule. My hope is that when the chapters are done, and it’s in print, no one’s going to care that I was a week late with one strip, or that I took Christmas break off.

Doesn’t make it easier to wait for now, does it? hee hee.

Who knows, I may be able to sneak you a couple of things between now and then. Subscribe to the RSS feed, and that way you’ll know for sure!

    Thanks!

  16. Matt

Steve, didn’t you realize that as soon as you put up your first strip, all responsibility you had to your job, your wife, your kids, all went right out of the window and now you must bow to the desires of the internet.

Happened with the very first strip. (I kid of course, this is sarcasm. :) )

  17. Og

Yeah, I know, Mister “I forgot to do my strip over lunch and now I’m going to be late”… hee hee hee… Responsibility is a double edged sword, innit?

  18. Thomas

Awesome! More cool little beepy thingys!

  19. Sardtok

When I saw the title in the RSS feed, I got kind of scared we’d have to wait until after Christmas for the last page: “Good News, Bad News”.

I love the small panels from the cabin. *boop*
And I had been wondering for a while now how the discovery panel would look. And I have to say I love the framing here. Cassie looks great, and I like the angles going on here.

  20. Og

Thanks, Sardtok. You say you’d been wondering what the discovery panel would look like – did you know what he was going to find?

  21. Sardtok

I was pretty sure he’d find Cassie (after all, episode one of the animation was supposed to be about Cassie and Simon meeting if I remember correctly), but not sure how many people he’d actually find at the crash site.
Could be Vin had gotten shot or something too, but I have a sneaky suspicion he might even be involved with the pirates. But we’ll just have to wait and see about that.

  22. Dan

Ending in the digger’s cabin as the computer identifies the locator beacon? Nope.
Ending with the sighting of the crashed ship, damaged, identifiable? Nope.
Ended with a lifeless space-suited figure, a pose of having succumbed to injury, unsheltered, exposed. The moon is a harsh mistress….

  23. Og

Dan – Hee hee… yeah, ain’t I a stinka? :) Oddly enough, I considered scenarios very much like you’ve outlined. But it seems like this is how you make a cliffhanger, doesn’t it?

  24. Tucker

I love the double meaning in the good/bad news line. Because it is both types of news about Cassie (as well as Sinclair).

This panel is both great writing and great visual story telling.

  25. Og

Well observed, Tucker! I wonder how many people caught my childish joke that Simon was saying Good News, Bad News – Good News that he didn’t find Vin, and Bad News that he found the security guard dead or dying.

  26. Theorist T

Now, we know that the secruity guard survived?
    Other questions remained…..
    1. Is Sinclair kidnapped by Pirates?
    2. Is there a conspiracy behind the pirate raiding?
    3. Does the aliens have to do with the story?
We read the comic but who reads the reader?

  27. Og

Theorist – the security guard wasn’t destroyed in a blaze of destruction, but I don’t think we can draw the conclusion yet that she survived. Is this The End of Cassie!? For the answer to these questions and more, be sure to tune in to the next Moon Town!

  28. Sardtok

So, the title doesn’t have a triple meaning?
    Good news: New strip.
Bad news: End of chapter and a break before the next one starts.

  29. Og

Well, I hadn’t seen that one, Sardtok, that’s true. But it works out, too. I’m sure there’s a fourth layer of meaning in there somewhere as well. The waters run deep here at Moon Town World Headquarters!

  30. Theorist T

to Og: I knew that she survived the ? thingy is just an error!

  31. Nickolas

Do not worry Og, I”m already subscribed to the RSS trought iGoogle. ^^

  32. Peter

Egads! “boop” even gets its own font! Excellent cliffhanger, Steve!

  33. Og

One must keep the BOOP happy…

  34. Nixon

    ..i bet something crashed there.
    Cool wordplay there:)
Great cliffhanger episode, too bad its over for 2009…
Really looking forward to chapter 2!!
Merry X-Mas holiday and a great New Years eve for you and your beloved ones!

  35. flawedprefect

I happen to like the boop. Is it bauhaus? Tres retro, monsieur.

  36. Og

All the computer beeps and boops are Dunebug 45MPH. Glad you likem!

  37. speearr

I’m kinda late to the party….. but I’m hoping the Boop means she’s alive!

Happy New Year 2010 Steve and to your family too!

  38. Mike Martin

    Steve . . .

New guy on the comments page here . . . not new to your comic, though. Been following it almost since the beginning. Going through withdrawals, however. Will be glad to see the strip moving again. (Know you’re busy . . . no pressure . . .)

Great comic, love the artwork. Always been a big fan of the ‘Space Genre.’ You pull it off well.

  39. Og

Thanks, everyone! Yup, the comic will return in just 10 days! AUGH! :)

  40. DCS

yep. pretty much what I expected — Sinclair has found Cassie. Let’s hope she’s still alive. Looks like the two of them will be investigating:
    1) Missing ore ship
    2) Space Pirates
    3) Alien presence
    4) Vin’s incredible productivity

  41. Og

I know it’s confusing, but that’s Simon Tripline who found Cassie, and he is still going to be looking for Vin Sinclair. As for what other investigations occur next? Only time will tell.

Clever that you knew this was where it was going. It surprised a bunch of people.
