070 – Breathe

Sometimes one person in a conversation is talking about feelings, and the other person is talking facts, and neither of them knows the difference. I’m convinced most verbal miscommunications stem from this situation.

One of the things I love about Flagg is that he loves to explain things that are self-evident. Because he himself is a bit of a dimwit, he assumes everyone else is, too, yet he explains things to them as if they are idiots. That’s a whole lot of man.

Security Agent Captain Cassandra Quinn is on assignment to the mining outpost Luna Seven amid rumors of pirates near the outpost. On her approach to the complex, she saw something moving around on the surface of the moon that shouldn’t have been. During her attempts to verify her visual sighting, a mysterious ship blasted her out of the sky. Her story starts HERE.

Meanwhile, on miner Simon Tripline’s morning commute to work, he sees something strange through a porthole. Shortly thereafter, Simon’s suspicions are aroused concerning Vin Sinclair, one of Luna Seven’s top drillers. Is there a dark secret to his success? The mechanic seems to suggest so, offering a little evidence to go with it, just in time for Simon’s eyes to play tricks on him again. Simon’s story starts HERE.

While on the job, Vin Sinclair became separated from the mining party. Simon took off to find him, but found Cassandra’s lifeless body instead.

Hmm, I’ve never carried anyone, “uh, like that” before. Usually I’d grab them by the knees and have their legs in front.
I would have loved to see how he lifted her up, cause I imagine it would be difficult. Silly Simon. :)

I love the second panel. Simon looks really downtrodden, so does Cassie, I guess, in her unconscious state.

Hey, don’t go too hard on ol’ flaggster. I’m starting to warm to the old geezer.

.. like sunshine on my soul … great quote – I think I’ll use that when I get my next ass chewing…

  4. Tom

Great stuff Steve, the characters are really starting to shine out. :)

  5. Mike M

Nothing like positive reinforcement to boost employee morale.

  6. Peter Palmiotti

Reminds me of an old boss I had once….Once! ;)

  7. Og

Glad you like it, Ed. That quote is cracking me up today every time I think of it.

Thanks for the nice notes, everyone!

“Like sunshine on my soul,” indeed… Sunshine Luna-style maybe: the kind that blasts across nearly unadulterated vaccum for two weeks at a go and withers the volatiles right outta you.

Dammit, Flagg is starting to grow on me, too! Maybe a weak solution of carbolic acid…

  9. Theorist T

2 strips later and mystery will begin!

  10. Chris

Well she’s safe and sound on the ship but I sure hope she gets some oxygen soon, otherwise Simon might need to perform a little mouth to mouth on Cassandra, and I’m guessing she won’t enjoy that.

  11. Og

Her face-shield is open, so she’s getting plenty of O2… but not for long.

  12. Utherkbn

I agree it would be hard to pick her up for that carry, but it makes a sweet view in that first panel. Artistic planning?

  13. Og

    Uther- it’s a two-fer.

    1. I loved that shot of Cassie the moment it occurred to me.

    2. Simon doesn’t know what he’s doing. Never learned the Fireman’s Carry, has no Heroism in him at the moment. Revealed a bit of character, and was funny, and I call that a win. But that shot of Cassie’s legs dangling over his back – priceless.

If you notice, too, she’s a good bit taller than him. Cracks me up that she’s all leg… heh heh…

  14. Utherkbn

    Og,
You’re right there, but don’t include the length of her foot. That threw me off at first and I thought she might be twice his height. Not twice his height, but taller, yes.
I like a lot of leg. I love the panels. Great stuff.

  15. Og

Yup. She’s 6 feet tall, and disproportionately leg. He’s around 5′8″.

  16. Sardtok

    “I guess I can carry her… Uh… Like this…”
I like how it’s emphasized that he’s doing it wrong. Even Simon knows. And, yeah, it’s a better view like this too.

    Haha @ Wright.

  17. Theorist T

To Og: Thanks for the extra 2 panels!

  18. Og

Theorist – seems like it needed those for clarity. I occasionally add this stuff. Cool that you caught it!

  19. Mike M

Ha! Maybe I’m a little slow but I just noticed he probably hit her head on every rung carrying her up the ladder that way . . .Great stuff!

  20. Og

Mike – I didn’t call attention to it in the strip, but that’s my assumption, too. And it makes me laugh every time I think about it.

  21. dadman

Og, with Mike M’s observation and your admission above, I’m thinking the title of this episode really fits Simon climbing the ladder.

Things That Go Bump must include Cassie’s helmet…

  22. Og

    Dadman- that’s too funny.
