081 – Five Minutes Later, Again…

A lot can happen in five minutes. Boy, I think Simon’s warming to this whole man-in-charge thing.

Behind-the-scene info: my son Kip thought it would be a good idea to put the second panel into that sort of silhouette or inverted inking, so that the text carried the joke rather than the image. I think his instincts were right.

Security Agent Captain Cassandra Quinn is on assignment to the mining outpost Luna Seven amid rumors of pirates near the outpost. On her approach to the complex, she saw something moving around on the surface of the moon that shouldn’t have been. During her attempts to verify her visual sighting, a mysterious ship blasted her out of the sky. Her story starts HERE.

Meanwhile, on miner Simon Tripline’s morning commute to work, he sees something strange through a porthole. Shortly thereafter, Simon’s suspicions are aroused concerning the mysterious activities of the base’s top earner, Vin Sinclair, who becomes separated from the mining party. Simon takes off to find him, but finds Captain Quinn instead. He rescues her, but she wakes up confused, angry and armed. While they argue, something is watching them.

But the disoriented Captain Quinn threatens to shoot Simon one too many times, so he buckles in, seals his mask, and vents the cab compartment, blowing her out of the digger into the vaccuum of the moon, even though she only has 5 minutes of oxygen left.

“If I remove the Duct Tape are you going to behave?” … so funny.

    Do I believe her?

  2. Ramon

    Haha way to go Simon!
BTW Like the coloring, the darkness of the room fits the mood. Kinda like an interrogation.

  3. flawedprefect

Yup. No denying it. He’s a man’s man. He’s got duct tape. Every real man has duct tape.

  4. Erik

The more I read, the more I love this comic =) Another great strip.

  5. WC

I gotta say, I love your writing style. This is definitely my favorite new comic. I can’t wait for more!

  6. PiperKev

Hmmmmm, I hope Simon grabbed her gun before reviving her!

  7. Dan

Duct tape fixes everything… well, almost everything…

  8. Nestor

    Your boy’s right, looks good.

  9. Mike M

Kudos on predicting the continued use of duct tape in the future . . . “Repeat after me.” Another laugh out loud moment. Thanks!

  10. Og

Thanks for the nice notes, everyone! You new guys who say this is your new favorite comic, I’m humbled! Glad to have you along. Tell yer friends!

WC – I gotta say, that’s a really great compliment. You know… I used to be able to draw pretty well, 20 years ago or so. It’s all I did, cartooning, drawing. I got decent at it. But most of what I’ve done the past 20 years in the game industry is *not* draw. I’ve worked in 3D, CG. Computer art, mostly. I’m starting to get my hand back after a year of drawing pretty much every week on Moon Town and various other strips, but I’m still not back on form yet, though I’m working on it very hard.

All that said, I work even harder at my writing, and I’m never quite sure it’s going over right. So as much as I appreciate when someone likes the art, it’s a real kick to hear the writing is finding its mark. Thanks for the note!

Mike – Duct tape will endure. It’s just too handy not to. Plus – you may have noticed – there are a LOT of ducts and hoses in the Moon Town universe.

  12. Tom Dell'Aringa

I’m not sure I believe her either, and I’m not sure duct taping her up was such a wise idea. Love the second panel Steve. Keep on rollin.

  13. Og

Thanks, Tom! What I love about whatever it is Simon’s doing right now – he just can’t seem to help himself. It’s like watching a train wreck. And it makes me laugh…

  14. DeathDave

Great comic, lots of joy reading :)

Steve, you might want to correct the link to your Twitter account on the “About” page, it directs to a non-existent account.

  15. Og

DeathDave – thanks for the note, and the bug catch. Fixing…

  16. Chris

I really don’t think that un-ducttaping her is such a great idea.

But on the other hand I think there may still be hope for the future since they still have duct tape.

  17. Kev_Brett

Love the last panel! Congratulations on such a brilliant webcomic. One of my top three fave webcomics!!!!!

  18. Og

Chris – Somebody told me yesterday that there was a study an duct tape is great for everything… except ducts. :) I believe duct tape will endure, and if I’m not mistaken, it is standard issue on NASA ships… didn’t they use it to save the Apollo 13 mission? Hmm.

Kev – Top 3! WOOT! :) Who are the other two lucky comics?

  19. Bartimaeus

Yes, you cannot use duct tape on ducts. Go figure.

    Also: Ha! Funny page.

  20. Skeptible

Agreed that it does emphasize the dialog, but it also makes it look like they are in a darkened room. Perhaps that can’t be helped.

  21. Sardtok

The inverted ink looks great, and it’s nice to see it in a different colour than the usual blueish purple.

The name duct tape is really weird, gaffa tape makes so much more sense. At least gaffers use gaffa tape. By the way, we call duct tape gaffa tape in Norway.

  22. Kev_Brett

Top three – this one, Eric Merced’s Frank Rain and Red’s Planet by Eddie Pittman.
Would say Moon Town is probably in the top two…
    (no pressure!!!)

  23. Roborat

Loving the strip, nice use of colour, and the character/plot development is interesting. I have a huge list of webcomics, but this has been bumped into my favorites shortlist.

Random bit of trivia. It was originally called duck tape, when intially developed during WWII, as it was waterproof, and is often still referred to as such.

  24. Kilochfuller

Wow! What a series! I love it. I NEED MORE.

  25. Og

Sardtok- agreed. It’s strange. But everyone knows what you’re talking about when you say Duct Tape, whereas gaffa doesn’t translate (gaffer’s tape does, but no one much understands gaffers outside of Hollywood).

Kev – wow, that’s distinguished company. I’m more than happy to be in that top three! I do love me some Red’s Planet and Eddie Pittman kicks my butt every day, seemingly for fun. I haven’t seen Eric Merced’s work yet, but I’m looking at it now based on your say-so. Great stuff! He’s a talented dude.

Roborat and Kilochfuller – welcome to Moon Town! Great to have you around the place. If I may ask, how did you discover the series? And Roborat – I hear people calling it Duck tape and always have assumed they were saying it wrong. That’s hysterical they were more right than I knew.

Thanks for the great comments, everyone… send your friends!

  26. Tink Bell

    Og, you constantly amaze me!

I was gonna cruise by, after getting sidetracked – as usual – by the sounds of Simon Pegg and Nathan Fillion discussing their ships, the Enterprise vs Serendipity, while in a plastered stupor within a Martian pub. Involved “singing” Dueling Banjos.

When I finally wrenched the White Owl out of her stationary orbit above Mars, and slipped on over to Luna to check out whether your aliens included My Babies, I stayed on inside the crater wall to repair some debris encountered while 11D-ing to the Sol system.

We sure are scattering trash, we Terrans. Mebbe the WHITE OWL can cut some swaths through the stuff for a while. Got any ideas on where I should start?

  27. Skeptible

My favorite alternate name for duct tape? 100 mph tape.
