The Orionid meteor shower should be pretty good tonight. As we pass through the trail left by Halley’s Comet, 20 meteors per hour should be visible from the Northern Hemisphere, but HEY- GREAT NEWS for my HUGE Australian following- 40 meteors per hour in the Southern Hemisphere! Here’s an interesting astronomical bit o’ trivia: Did you know that Betelgeuse will go super (if not hyper) nova in our life time? If it’s up in the sky during the day, you’ll see it, bright and clear. It will then fade to a bright smudge of nebulous funkiness. And this is 600 Lightyears away.
Bugger – only the northern hemisphere, eh?
If that’s true, it means Betelgeuse went nova 600 years ago, and what we are seeing are the final, dying rays of a dead sun. That is VERY interesting.
As for the Orionids – you didn’t read the rest of the article. Go read again.
Hint- it’s good news for The Southern Hemisphere…
